If you are writing a review of a book, there may be an aspect of your own perspective to add. Maybe, your colleague loved the book you gave him or her and gave the book a high rating. Perhaps, he or she found the book interesting. It is important to know that if you want to know what to do in the close reading essay, you need to have a balance of your own viewpoint and the viewpoint of your reader.

In close reading, you want to know what your readers are thinking

You must reflect what they are thinking. After all, most of the time you are the author of the material and in order to understand what your readers are thinking, you have to reflect theirs.

This is done through careful reflection. In this exercise, you should try to reflect on what you know about the subject at hand. You want to get as much information as possible about the subject.

Reflect on your knowledge of the subject at hand. You must be able to relate this information to what you know about the subject. If you do not know much about the subject, you will have a difficult time trying to bring yourself to write about the subject. If you know a lot about the subject, you can draw more attention to the information you know.

The second step in close reading is to reflect on the viewpoint of your reader. The viewpoint of your reader is very important. A close reading can only be effective if you are reflecting the viewpoint of your reader.

As you begin to close reading, you want to reflect on your own viewpoint

Start by looking at the viewpoint of your reader. Determine if you and your reader are similar or different.

Determine what you feel your view point should be. What do you think your reader will find convincing? What do you think the reader will find compelling? What do you find the reader will not agree with?

To complete a close reading exercise, it is very important to understand where you are in relation to your reader. What do you know about your reader? What are you missing? Are you aware of things your reader knows but does not know?

A close reading should start with your writer-reader relationship. Then you will need to develop your own viewpoint. Reflecting on the viewpoint of your reader, you will be able to close the essay in a way that reflects your own viewpoint.
